Loyola Catholic School has Minnesota State Champions!!

Andrew Thom, Tom Cullen, John Fleming, Mack Douglass and Joe Kopel have won the Minnesota Class A Knowledge Bowl competition at Cragun's near Brainerd. They had some very exciting matches, and won by 5 points.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!!
My name is Khia Warzecha, and I’m an 8th grader at Loyola Catholic School. I invite you to participate in my service project “Loyola Locks of Love” by donating your hair to create specialized hair pieces for disadvantaged children suffering from permanent hair loss due to any medical condition. If you are willing to donate 10 inches of your hair to help a child regain a positive outlook on life, their self-esteem, and confidence, then I urge you to sign up as a donator. My event will be held in the Fitzgerald gymnasium on April 22 at 6:30 p.m. Stylists will be on site to cut the ponytail, but further styling, if desired, will need to be completed with your personal stylists. Specific information about the Locks of Love charity and hair specifications can be found on their website at www.locksoflove.org . Donator sign up sheets are available in all school offices, or you can call me at 625-8954 to sign up. All family members, neighbors and friends are welcome to participate. I look forward to seeing you there!

Hats off to Loyola's Knowledge Bowl team who won Regionals yesterday and will advance to state competition on April 22-23, 2009. The team consists of: Andrew Thom, Tom Cullen, Mack Douglass, John Fleming, and Joe Kopel, with coach Diane Jewison.

Many of you have undoubtedly seen Mr. Tanhoff and Mr. Doyle taking photos at many of our sports events. Many have asked where they can view these photos. Their website is now up and running where pictures can viewed at www.mymemorypics.com for a limited time.

If you would like them to come take pictures of your team or event this Spring, feel free to call or e-mail them. They will take the pictures and post them to their website. A portion of the proceeds from the photo sales will benefit the Loyola Boosters.

Loyola's Knowledge Bowl team brought home their fourth 1st place trophy yesterday. Next Monday they will participate in subregionals at Minnesota State Mankato. Great job and good luck next week.

Lenten Calendar

Kudos to the Knowledge Bowl team who came home with a first place trophy for the third time this season. Their first place score topped second place by 34 points - a remarkable feat!!

Peanut Butter Update

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Minnesota Department of Health has asked all schools to refrain from serving peanut butter due to the concerns of the contamination of some peanut butter. We at Loyola Catholic School have never received or used the peanut butter that was recalled. We have been serving the same brand of peanut butter since the 1st day of school. Mankato Public is changing the previously scheduled April 2009 two-hour late start from Tuesday, April 14, 2009 to TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 2009. Please note that busses will run on the two-hour late start schedule on March 31st and will run at the regular time on April 14th.

McEducator Night

is Family night at McDonald’s, located on Madison Avenue! Come and join the fun, have dinner, see student’s school projects, and visit with other Loyola families! McDonald’s generously donates a portion of inside sales from McEducator Night to our school community. Come show your support and join us for dinner between 5 pm and 7 pm. Student projects will be displayed on the following nights:

Loyola Intermediate School Grades 4 - 8

Fitzgerald Campus houses grades four through eight and provides a middle school environment and curriculum for grades six through eight. Fitzgerald provides a unique spiritual, physical, social, psychological and educational environment to meet preadolescent students' needs.

Staff nurtures a caring climate that helps each student strengthen his or her faith in God, deepen relationships with Jesus and become more aware of the work of the Holy Spirit in his or her life. Religion is integrated into all aspects of the school day. Weekly student led masses or prayer services give students opportunity to experience the word of God more fully. Middle school students are prepared for high school with where life, learning and faith are joined. Academic programs are integrated with Catholic Social Principles, character building, and peace concepts.Curriculum areas for grades four through eight include religion, reading, science, math, social studies, computer technology, language, art, music, and physical education. Service to those in need is integrated into all aspects of the curriculum.Enrichment opportunities are available through a wide variety of activities, such as spelling bee, geography bee, basketball, Destination Imagination, and Exchange City.

Please note: As a security measure, Fitzgerald Campus now has a buzzer system with an electronic door release installed at the front entrance. Visitors must push the button for admittance into the building during school hours from 8:00 a.m. until 3:45 p.m.

Challenged by high academic standards, Loyola High School students are encouraged to reach their God-given potential academically, as leaders and decision-makers, and to fulfill their own success and happiness through a Gospel-taught lifetime of service to others.

A four-year faith formation program provides a distinctive dimension to Loyola's curriculum, making it unique among high schools in the Mankato area. Rooted in the basic teachings of the Catholic Church, students gain greater understanding of the sacraments, develop deeper reverence for God's Word found in sacred Scripture, and learn to expand their responsibility to act morally and ethically as Christians.

A comprehensive curriculum is offered in faith formation, English, social studies, science, math, world languages, computer technology, physical education and health, art, career/college preparation, business and technology education, and music.

Loyola provides advanced placement (AP) course options for students in English, calculus, biology, Spanish, and government. With students throughout Minnesota, Loyola students are required to pass the Minnesota Basic Standards Tests in math, reading and writing.

Loyola participates in Minnesota's Post-Secondary Enrollment Options program which gives high school juniors and seniors opportunities to take courses, at no charge, full or part-time, at liberal arts, community or technical colleges and
universities or trade schools for high school and college credit.

Loyola Catholic School will begin a bold step toward digital literacy with the inception of a 1:1 computer initiative for grades 7 – 12 beginning in the fall of 2009. The opportunity for every student in grades 7 – 12 to have a laptop computer and the availability of wireless networks on both campuses will create a one of a kind learning and teaching environment for students in the Mankato area.

Classroom laptop carts will be available for students in grades K – 6 preparing them for the day when they have technology at their fingertips at school and at home from the first day of school to the last.
